This is a brief 'snapshot' of the territory the Reivers effectively controlled, as their raiding activities extended Northward to Edinburgh and Southward to York. In order to understand the nature of reiving, one must consider the constant war making that raged between the English and Scottish for hundreds of years. Families forged their own security through cunning intelligence gathering, fierce defence of their homes and property, and establishing self-sufficiency through successful farming and stealing!
