Stage 1 of the 2027 Tour de France has been unveiled: a full road stage from Edinburgh to Historic Carlisle, showcasing the rugged roads and striking landscapes of the Scottish Borders and Cumbria.
With excitement already building in a region of the UK renowned for its cycling clubs, enthusiasm and demanding routes, local support is expected to be strong. Added to this will be thousands of visiting fans, so even the usually remote stretches of the course are likely to attract spectators.
An outline map of the route has been released to whet the appetite, and to compliment this, I have created a Google map of the Route based on that information.
So far, it generally appears to follow the route of the old North British Railways (NBR) Waverley Line until Longtown, then heads south eastward to the pretty market town of Brampton, before turning west again into Carlisle
It will be updated as further details are confirmed and, while not definitive, it should be very close to the final route, providing a useful guide for anyone wishing to follow the stage or find a good vantage point along the way.
Thanks to Giancarlo Rinaldi of BBC News for publishing the graphic used to illustrate this post — it is much appreciated, and let us hope our interpretations prove accurate.
